This came in my email:

Hi my friends,

If you are in SAG-AFTRA please take a moment to make your voice heard and sign this petition today. About 50 members of the animation community met at a hotel boardroom last night to discuss the proposed Animation Contract which will go before the SAG-AFTRA National Board for approval this weekend and be binding for the next 3 years.Under the new constitution of the merged union, you don’t get to vote on this contract. That power lays in the hands of the National Board. Michael Bell has agreed to take these signed petitions and speak in front of the National Board on our behalf. I can’t think of anyone better to represent the animation communities interests than Michael. He has worked on countless SAG committees to uphold our interests for years.

Here are the facts of the proposed contract: RESIDUALS TIED TO BUDGETS A dangerous precedent: Contracts for New Media programming have Residuals linked to the BUDGETS of animated programs, rather than the financial success andlor frequency of reuse. ANIMATION = LOW BUDGET. LOW BUDGET = NO RESIDUALS. RESIDUALS FOR NEW MEDIA There are essentially NO RESIDUALS for any animated program produced for New Media (streaming, SVOD, etc.) One exception: If budgeted at $25K per minute (approximately $550,000 per episode) a residual payment is triggered after one year ofFREE streaming. There are currently NO animated programs that meet this criteria. CONTRACT FOR SVOD (Amazon, Netflix, Bulu, etc.) NO MINIMUMS FOR SESSIONS NO LIMIT ON TIME FOR SESSIONS NO LIMIT ON VOICES (we went on strike to get a bump for additional voices) NO LIMIT ON EPISODES PER SESSION NO RESIDUALS* *One exception: If budgeted at $1.3 million per episode, a three-tiered residual formula is triggered. There are currently NO animated programs that meet this criteria and it is highly unlikely that there we be even ONE program like this over the next three years. This contract is for the next THREE YEARS. Any SVOD shows produced during this time period will NEVER pay residuals when rerun on SVOD and will have UNLIMITED reuse on SVOD in perpetuity. FORMULA HISTORY (other contracts) – Things move slowly if at all! Interactive – Established with no residuals = Still no residuals. Home Video/DVD – Fonnula for residuals hasn’t been renegotiated in over 30 years. Basic Cable – Formula for residuals has moved only 50/0 over the last 30 years. VOTING Under the SAG-AFTRA constitution, this contract will be voted up or down by THE NATIONAL BOARD, not you, the men1bership. YOU WILL NOT GET A BALLOT. I have attached the petition (please write your name, sign, date, and include your sag-aftra #). Email it ASAP to brooklynboymike@gmail.com by Friday. The SAG-AFTRA National Board is meeting thisSaturday October 11th to RATIFY this contract and most of the animation community is completely unaware of this.

This petition is our LAST chance to make our voices heard.

Yours in Solidarity, Catherine Cavadini

TO THE SAG-AFTRA NATIONAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS:

I am shocked to learn that the current Animation Contract Proposal for SVOD (i.e. Netflix, Amazon, etc.) has NO minimum scale, NO limit on session duration, NO limit on number of voices and NO limit on number of episodes per session. Furthermore there are NO residuals for actors in animated programs for SVOD that are budgeted “under $1.3 million dollars.” Are you aware that currently 100% of all animated programs for SVOD are budgeted under $1.3 million and over the next three years of this contract there will be an essentially RESIDUAL-FREE zone for animated programming? I am already auditioning for a significant number of animated programs being produced for this platform (and there is no doubt that there will be a veritable explosion of animated content on SVOD for the proposed duration of this contract.)  Actors who choose to take this work in the next three years will have NO income from the SVOD reruns of these programs in perpetuity.

I am also shocked to learn that I will NOT be able to vote on this contract. As a working voice-over actor I demand that the Board of Directors send this contract out for a vote to the affected membership.
