New AFTRA January Show Sheet Is Up and Lopez as in Is the George Lopez Show, Lopez Tonight, STILL NON-UNION
Well, I am happy to say that I have been checking the AFTRA website since I posted this story yesterday, and although eleven days late, it was finally posted. Why did AFTRA wait a third of a month to post it. I’ll leave that up to you. As we showed you, “Lopez Tonight” started as a non-union show on TBS. (See Below)
But, but be that as it may, according to AFTRA’s just posted Hollywood January show sheet, “Lopez Tonight” is now a signatory and that is good news for all of us.
While perusing the Internet, I read an unofficial statement by a George Lopez fan that his show Lopez Tonight was NON-UNION.
Hmmm, this sounded like something the Ol’ Watchdog needed to check out. So, I went to the AFTRA Website and checked AFTRA’s December 2009 Show Sheets; Neither the New York or Hollywood Show Sheets listed ‘Lopez Tonight’ as a signatory.
Now since the show debuted on November 9th, 2009 it seemed suspicious to me that the show was not listed in the December 2009 Show sheet. And then too, TBS is not necessarily a bastion of unionism.
So, my next step was to give AFTRA a call and find out. But the operator was not, at that time, able to connect me with the person I needed to talk too. So I suggested she could answer my question. Was Lopez Tonight an AFTRA Show? Her response: “Yes.”
Well, one thing the Ol’ Dog has learned is that a response on the telephone from AFTRA isn’t worth the paper it isn’t written on. So, I decided I best get it in writing. So, I sent the following email.
I received the following email response:
Fair enough, Ms. Moore’s answer seemed pretty definitive to me. But, but just to be on the safe side, I would check out the show sheets in January.
Well, a most “curious” thing happened. I checked out the current AFTRA show sheets tonight and, and although the January 2010 show sheet for New York was up, the December 2009 show sheet for Hollywood had not been replaced with the new January 2010 show sheet.
Hmmm, again: Time for a little more Watchdog sleuthing.
And guess what I came up with? A November 6, 2009 You tube video of a young dancer taken on the day she was to audition on “Lopez Tonight.” After the audition, she told the camera:
“Hey, you guys. I’m outside of Warner Brothers. It turns out when I got the paperwork; it said it was a non-union show. So, I said, I’m in the union. I’m in SAG and AFTRA–and that was my “Kiss of Death.”
Here’s a link to that video.
First off, kudos to the young ladyand cooties to AFTRA.
Why wasn’t this information made available to the membership of both AFTRA and SAG at the time of the show’s debut. Had that been done, perhaps some pressure could have been put on both Mr. Lopez and the show itself to reconsider their non-union status.
So, is the show now a signatory? And if it is, why isn’t it listed on the new January Show Sheet, as promised in the email to me? Or, for that matter, why isn’t the new January show sheet up on the AFTRA website? Hmmm…
Perhaps, someone at AFTRA should explain. You think?

*I think they meant (1/01, 2010) since the showsheet posted on the AFTRA website is for 1/01/2010)
Oh, and a word to the wise; if you need a response from AFTRA…get it in writing.
