Watchdog Exclusive: We’ve got Hughes, Hubbard & Reed LLP, Hasbro’s law firms response to a recipient–that dared to OPT OUT of the MPTF “Deal!” Also a couple of Watchdog tidbits of inside info! If you’re game read on.
Recently we posted the letter sent to unsuspecting participants to be included in the Hasbro game Shout! The solicitation with a MPTF letterhead was sent by Howell Begle Jr., identified as the Special Counsel for the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s Shout , DVD game!
Well, the recipients attorney OPTED OUT of the “deal” by telephone!
Here is the response received by the attorney from Mr. Begle’s associate. You’ll notice that IT is on Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP stationary. Oh, by the way Hubbard & Reed, LLP Client list includes Hasbro! You’ll also notice that Hasbro was mentioned neither in the solicitation or the terse response. (Typed transcript below)
In the meantime, the WGA has refused to waiver their members rights! Originally the “deal” was predicated on the stipulation that if one guild refused to grant the waiver it would be denied.
But now those behind this are saying, ah, but well the WGA is different…so their waiver, ah, well, it don’t apply! Also another caveat, seems to be crumbling.
You see all the major studios where all supposed to grant gratis waivers. Apparently, a few aren’t going along. One of those balking has already signed a deal with Mattel and their “Scene It” game—and the other seems to have given it the Ol’ rabbit punch. So, for the time being, it could be that if The Hasbro/MPTF is to continue, those pushing it better start “Wishing On A Star.” In the meantime this is your Ol’ Watchdog pundit saying “Th-th-that’s all folks!”
