The Ol’ Watchdog brings Background issues to the Forefront
As, many of you are aware; our fellow background members have been used by the current Restore Respect leadership as a sort of political football. Whenever there is an election, or referendum, the RR people promise them pie in the sky. Unfortunately, the minute their vote is no longer needed, their piece of the pie quickly disappears.
Here’s some info that you Background folks might find helpful! Membership First Candidate Russell McConnell supplied it to the Ol Watchdog
Don’t throw your ballot and your future away!
There are around 15,000 SAG BGA’s in Hollywood, which makes you (us) a potentially powerful force, but only if you (we) vote.
In 1994-95 there were 9 BGA’s on the Hollywood Board, now there are less than half that. (Voting for celebrities without knowing their views is risky.)
BGA’s still have a long way to go to get back all they have lost in the Theatrical/TV contracts over the last 25 years, as in the points that follow.
Did you know that N.Y. BGA’s get still get ‘night premium’ pay on movies and TV, and that we don’t?
Did you know that N.Y. BGA’s get ‘double time’ pay after only 10 hours on movies and TV, and that we don’t get it until after 12 hours?
Did you know that in N.Y. the first 85 BGA’s hired on a movie are on SAG vouchers, and that here it’s only the first 45?
Did you know that in N.Y. the first 25 BGA’s hired on a TV show, in addition to all the stand-ins, are on SAG vouchers; and that here it’s only the first 16 plus 1 stand-in?
Did you know that the N.Y. BGA zone has a 300-mile radius, and that here it is only 75 miles?
Did you know that at one time over the last 40 years the BGA daily rate was as high as approximately 1/3 the principal daily rate, and that now it is only around 1/6?
Did you know that both Hollywood and N.Y. BGA’s used to have a ‘silent bit’ provision in their contracts with a rate around 50% higher than the base?
GET THE PICTURE! VOTE; and get as many others to do the same!
Thanks to Russ for the info! It is no secret that the Ol’ Watchdog thinks that we need to get as many Membership First, or independent candidates, in leadership positions.
Restore Respect doesn’t seem to get it. For our union to be strong, it must serve ALL of our members–not just an elite few!
